Girdwood Food Pantry

The Girdwood Food Pantry has been in existence for about 5 years, providing food on an emergency basis for those in need of assistance.  We are open on the third Sunday of each month, from 2-4 p.m.  Next opening: July 20th, 2014.

The pantry primarily consists of canned and dry foods.  Food and cash donations have come from many local individuals, boy and girl scouts, local merchants, and non-profit organizations.  All food and cash collected for the Girdwood Food Pantry remains in Girdwood.

Girdwood Chapel operates the Girdwood Food Pantry.  The Girdwood Food Pantry has become a much-needed mission in Girdwood.  There are families that need assistance on a regular basis, and those as a temporary source while in transition.  The only requirements are that those who use the pantry are residents of Girdwood and are in a low-earning income bracket.

We are also a partner agency with the Food Bank of Alaska, which gives us greater buying power, and access to bread, dairy, meats, juices, fruit and vegetable, at little (16 cents per pound), or no cost.  Thus, we can provide fresh and perishable items to our clients.   Most fresh fruit and vegetables are purchased with cash donations.  Oftentimes, we are able to provide a variety of fresh produce at less cost when compared to canned or frozen items.

DONATIONS:  We are always in need of the basic staples such as soups, ramens, pastas, pasta sauces, tuna and other canned meats, beans, mac 'n cheese, side dish packets, cereal, peanut butter, coffee, tea, canned items (e.g. milk, fruit, vegetables, meals, such as stew, ravioli), rice, etc.  Large quantities are nice if they can be repackaged into smaller units, (i.e. flour, sugar, pancake mix, oatmeal, rice, dried beans).  It is also helpful if crackers and other snacks are individually wrapped.   We can also accept unused travel shampoos, soaps, shaving cream, razors, as well as diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies and paper products.  If you are not sure, donate it anyway, as the Food Pantry team must inspect all items for food safety and usage safety before making them available.  Sorry, but we cannot accept vitamins or mouthwash.

Donations may be brought to Glacier City Realty at 174 Hightower Road during business hours.  Please do NOT leave food items outside on the porch/steps of the church.  (Otherwise area wildlife might consider your donation as a free gift to them, instead of to humans!)

We also accept cash donations.  Cash is used to pay the Food Bank purchases and to buy fresh fruit and vegetables for our clients, as well as other staples that may not be available at the Food Bank.  If you would like to make a cash donation, please make your check payable to:
